Massage Modalities

Swedish Massage ~ Designed to increase circulation and to relieve muscle aches while increasing relaxation and a sense of general well being.  The hallmark of this type of massage is its flowing style.  It provides a foundation for other, more specific modalities and an opportunity to explore and develop an atmosphere of sensitivity and trust.   A good introduction to massage.

Kinesthetic Awareness through Movement ~ Combines gentle rocking and rhythmic techniques to increase range-of-motion and relaxation in joints and to open up joint spaces, facilitating a sense of grace and broadening possibility in movement.  Excellent for those who suffer from arthritis.

Pre-natal Massage ~ For the mothers-to-be!  Offers support to the body as it changes to accommodate growth within.  Often focuses on areas highly affected by body changes during pregnancy: hips, sciatic, low back, feet (reduces edema), etc.  Typically only performed during the second and third trimesters.  Jennifer holds advanced certification in pregnancy massage.

Connective Tissue Therapy ~ Commonly called “deep tissue” massage, this type of bodywork focuses on lengthening chronically shortened muscles and allowing muscles to return to a relaxed state. Designed to improve range of motion, offer relief from problematic postural habits, and increase ease of movement.  This work is done slowly and deeply, listening with great awareness to clients’ needs and to subtle changes in tissue.

Neuromuscular Therapy ~ Addresses specific tension patterns that trigger referred pain throughout the body. Commonly termed "Trigger Point Therapy".

Injury Recovery Therapy & Medical Massage ~ Specialized bodywork to help heal specific injuries and related physiological issues. Also addresses specific pathologies of the body.  Advanced training on issues of the head, neck, and jaw (whiplash, TMJ, TOS, etc.).  Usually structured as a series of sessions.  Initial consultation required.  Medical clearance may be required.

Sports Massage ~ Focuses on areas that are overworked from repetitive motion. Assists the athlete in pre or post-competition.  Preventative injury therapy.

Energy/Polarity Therapy ~ Intended to balance the energetic organization of the body.  Addresses areas of congested energy and encourages release in these areas.  Both light and deep contacts are used with the intention of drawing the client’s attention to patterns that may arise in mind and body. Clients should wear comfortable clothing.

Reflexology ~ Pressure applied to points in foot, hand and/or ear that correspond to internal organs and glands.  Helps to stimulate normal function of the organ involved, thus aiding in self-healing and offering mental and physical well-being.

Craniosacral Therapy ~ addresses the entirety of the craniosacral area, working with the craniosacral fluid and structures to dissolve issues within the space between the cranium and sacrum.  Clients should wear comfortable clothing.

Shiatsu ~ A Japanese form of bodywork based on Eastern philosophies of health and healing.  It is designed to heal and promote health by influencing and improving the flow of “life force” or “energy” (referred to variously as Ki, Chi, or Prana) in the body.  Pressure and gentle manipulation along primary meridians and the major points along these meridians help to improve health, vitality and stamina. Traditional shiatsu is performed on the floor with large floor mats, is done fully clothed, and incorporates lots of finger and palm pressure and stretching.  Clients should wear comfortable clothing.
If not performed in the traditional way, specific shiatsu points can be incorporated into an integrative massage session, as well as the addressing of entire meridians.

Aromatherapy ~ The art and science of blending and applying therapeutic grade essential oils to enhance the benefits of massage.  Use of healthful, high-quality oils, obtained from eco-friendly providers, to create individualized body-care products such as massage oils and steam blends.  Each essential oil has specific, highly therapeutic properties, the chemistry of which can be incorporated into a massage to support and augment the intention of any session.

Hydrotherapy ~ applications of heat or cold for specific conditions.  Experience the use of contrast applications, castor oil packs, ice massage, detoxifying foot baths, sore muscle soaks.
